Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger publicly stated his desire of signing a full back this winter, and Le Havre full back Benjamin Mendy, as speculated last summer, has claimed that the French manager had a definitive interest in signing him last summer.
Mendy, who is a highly rated 17-year old, has represented the national side in the under-17 and under-18 level, and proves to be another player from the French outfit that looks to break into the next level of football, and had a chance with Arsenal last summer, but instead signed on professional terms with Le Havre.
In a local interview, Mendy spoke about Arsenal’s interest and his future, and said, “There was interest from a lot of clubs. I know Arsenal were one,” he said. “But I have a sensible head on my shoulders. I am still living at the education centre here with my friends who play for the reserves. I have not changed.
“After Le Havre, I would like to spend two seasons in Ligue 1 and then go to England. I would then like to go to Barcelona, where my idol Dani Alves plays.”
His career plan seems an ideal one for a youngster, but whether Wenger does come back for him or not, only time will tell; until then, the Gunners continue to be linked with full backs like Wayne Bridge and Aly Cissokho.
