NEWCASTLE, England  ●  Goalkeeper Tim Krul is a doubt for Newcastle United’s game against Everton at Goodison Park on September 17 after returning early from international duty injured.

Krul, 24, was handed the chance to stake his claim to be Netherlands No. 1 on Friday, starting the 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Turkey with AS Roma keeper Maarten Stekelenburg dropped to the bench.

He was hoping to continue in goal for Tuesday’s match away to Hungary, but suffered an elbow injury in training and instead of flying to Budapest will head back to Newcastle.

The severity of the injury is not yet clear, but Krul must be a doubt for the Magpies’ next league game, which is followed three days later by their Europa League opener in Portugal against Maritimo.

If Krul is unable to recover for the game at Everton, veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper could make his first Premier League appearance for almost 18 months.
