Move Arsenal’s Song to Barca confirmed
LONDON, England ● Arsenal have confirmed that they have agreed a deal to sell defensive midfielder Alex Song to Spanish side Barcelona.
The 24-year-old Cameroon international will now travel to the Nou Camp to agree personal terms and undergo a medical, Arsenal announced in a statement on their website.
Song was left out of the Gunners’ squad for the opening game of the season against Sunderland, as the side were held to an underwhelming 0-0 draw.
“Arsenal Football Club can confirm that terms have been agreed for the transfer of Alex Song to Barcelona,” a club statement read. “Song will now travel to the Catalan club to agree personal terms and undergo a medical ahead of the proposed move.”
Song, 24, joined Arsenal from Bastia, initially on loan for 2005-06 before signing permanently a year later for just £1 million. Despite initial question marks over his potential, he emerged as a key player for the Gunners.
The Cameroon international made 46 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal last season, but this summer speculation has arisen over his future, amid interest from Barcelona.
Following the exit of Robin van Persie to Manchester United, manager Arsene Wenger confirmed Song could also leave the club. On Saturday, after their draw with the Black Cats at Emirates Stadium, Barcelona announced a deal had been struck.
Their official Twitter account read: “FC Barcelona has agreed a deal with Arsenal FC for the transfer of Alex Song to the Camp Nou.
“Song will sign for the next five seasons with a release clause of €80 million. On Monday he’ll have a medical and then join the rest of the squad for the official team presentation at the Gamper.”
