Twente win six in a row
Ajax was not able to beat ADO Den Haag
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands ● FC Twente beat SC Heerenveen 1-0 Sunday to make it six wins out of six in the Dutch league this season.
The league leader, whose players were greeted before kickoff by visiting South African anti-apartheid icon Desmond Tutu, took the lead in the 58th minute through Dusan Tadic. He could have made it 2-0, but his late header was well saved by goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt.
PSV Eindhoven easily beat Feyenoord 3-0 to go fourth, level on points with Ajax, which could only manage a 1-1 draw at ADO The Hague.
Playing without suspended captain Mark van Bommel, PSV forward Ola Toivonen opened the scoring with a long-range shot. Dutch internationals Georginio Wijnaldum and Luciano Narsingh added the second and third goals late in the match.
“This was an important win that we really needed after two defeats,” coach Dick Advocaat said.
In The Hague, ADO dominated the first half and took a deserved lead in the 14th minute when center back Tom Beugelsdijk headed in a corner by Danny Holla.
Ryan Babel equalized for Ajax just after the hour mark, tapping in a cross from right back Ricardo van Rhijn.
Ajax coach Frank de Boer criticized his team’s sluggish start.
“We should have been ready from the first second and we weren’t,” De Boer said. “We only matched their aggression after an hour and started to trouble ADO.”
AZ took the lead at NAC Breda through Netherlands midfielder Adam Maher, but Kees Luijckx and Sepp de Roover scored second-half goals to give NAC its first win of the season.
